I have been working in the creative sector since studying graphic design and illustration at LJMU. I started out painting murals and attending graffiti events – working primarily with spray paint at that time. I would then progress to painting large scale corporate murals once I graduated and began a placement at Nonconform – where I still work today. In my university days, I was often told by tutors that ‘you would never work in an agency’
Hilariously I hated computers whilst at uni, and preferred making everthing from scratch. Even now I try to be as hands on as possible, but obviously using a computer is inevitable with the job I do.
I am a bit slow at posting. A recent mural painted with @iamhuman_design @nonconform for St Cuthbert’s Catholic High School.
Working alongside the school’s Year 7–9 Art Club, we set out to create a brand new mural for the playground, one that would bring colour to the space and put the school’s core values front and centre: Commitment, Courage, Compassion and Community.
Rather than designing something in isolation and presenting it to the school, we wanted the pupils themselves to shape the artwork. Each student was invited to respond to the four values in their own way — through visual sketches and written reflections on what Commitment, Courage, Compassion and Community means to them.
Once we had this brilliant mix of ideas, we then pulled it all together: taking the pupils’ individual visual and written responses and weaving them into one cohesive final composition, ready to bring to life at full scale.
The students didn’t just inspire the design, they helped paint it. Getting the Art Club involved in the physical painting process meant the mural is genuinely theirs, made by the school community, for the school community. The result is a bold, colourful addition to the playground that reflects what St Cuthbert’s stands for, and we hope it’s a mural that keeps that space feeling vibrant for years to come.
Headmaster Stuart Holland summed up the reaction perfectly: “Wow! This is beyond anything we could have imagined.”
We’re really happy with how it turned out, and we’re grateful to the whole Art Club for their creativity and hard work.
